A daily success practice that David Allen, productivity expert and bestselling author of Getting Things Done shared with me is having a place to write.
“It gets easier if you have a place to write. I found that in writing, especially in that kind of writing, not to write at my desk. Coz my desk is [where] a lot of my work and my life goes on and I found that its easier for me to unhook, take my laptop, sit by a fireplace outside or in the yard or where ever I might be in a different context. That’s something I discovered—its easier for me to write that way. When I sit in my desk I get into a sort of work modality. I found that’s not probably the best place for me to be creatively productive. Its nice to have a spot to sit down and every time you sit down you get into that writing mentality or modality. I think that’s helpful.” –David Allen
I found this tip very helpful. When I attempt to write my book in my office desk, I tend to get pulled to do other things in my business. I couldn’t seem to concentrate.
So I took David’s advice. I started going out when I want to make progress on my writing. I tried Star Bucks, Panera, Barnes & Noble and Coffee Bean. I’m testing out which spot I’m most comfortable with.
It’s been effective so far. I found that when I’m out and I put the intention of focusing solely on my book, I accomplish more. Since I made an effort to get out of my usual work zone and I know I have limited time to get as much done as possible it turns out that my productivity rises.
How about you, is there a particular place that you feel more in the flow when you’re writing? Do you have other suggestions of places I can go to where I can plug my laptop and get Internet access? Please share by posting a comment below!
