When authors discover that they must run their book as a business to make their book a bestseller, there are two usual reactions.
Those who are starting out in the book process, feel ecstatic for getting a heads up and not having to go through lethal mistakes. For those who are already published finding this out for the first time is another story. If you’re like them, you feel stuck.
They tell me, “Okay, I made all these mistakes of not planning ahead, not marketing my book earlier and now I don’t have money to invest in anything else. What do I do?”
If you’re in this boat, you’re probably feeling stressed, frustrated and hopeless. You feel like you’ve tried everything already and now you’re exhausted and desperate. Giving up has become a very tempting option.
Take a deep breath and know that you are not alone. Here are 3 tips to keep you on track on the bestseller path.
1. Get clear on your BIG WHY. Why are you doing this in the first place? What’s your purpose and intention for putting this book out to the world?
If your sole purpose is to make money, then I suggest its time to switch careers because you will not get rich from book royalties. There are plenty other ways to make big money and its not from book sale profits.
If however you have a big mission and a big vision to transform lives with your work, then get clear with that. Play that dream in your mind’s eye in full color. How important is this to you? How would your life change? Get reconnected and get re-energized so quitting becomes not an option.
2. Never let money get in the way. Raise Capital. This is the first next step for you if you really want to put your message out in the world and make big money doing it. Some ways you can raise funds…
- Carve out a marketing budget from your business to allocate for your book project.

- If you don’t have a marketing budget yet, make one now and start filling it up as money comes in.
- Get more clients.
- You may get investors
- or get a line of credit.
- Consider using some of your savings.
- Be creative and put together fund raising activities.
- A great resource you can explore is KickStarter.com. If you have a great idea and you communicate that message well, then it can spread fast. This site will help you so a large group of people can back you up financially on your project.
3. Don’t stop sharing your message. While you’re in the process of raising capital for your book venture, continue taking advantage of the free ways to build your tribe and sharing your message to the world.
Keep on blogging, writing articles, posting on forums, networking on facebook, LinkedIn and twitter, etc. You may not see much result from these immediately. However, once you’ve raised capital for publicity, hiring a support team, coaching, creating a marketing strategy, a bestseller campaign, and so forth, the pay off from these free avenues will come to the surface.
