Biggest Obstacle to Becoming a Bestseller

Bestselling authors are highly respected, admired and compensated for a reason. They have accomplished something that the ordinary hasn’t. If it was easy to be a bestselling author, then everybody would be one and it won’t be so special anymore.

Are they smarter or more intelligent than you? Not on your topic.  Its already a given that you know your subject matter that’s why you’re writing a book on it.

So what’s the difference? The biggest difference between successful authors and unsuccessful authors is mindset. Give the same exact steps and tools to all authors and very few will actually make it.

If you’re like most authors you are full of excuses. “I don’t have money,”  “I hate marketing,” “I don’t know enough,” “I don’t have time,” or “I don’t know how to market.“ This is a scarcity mindset that is focused on limitations instead of solutions.  Your biggest obstacle is YOU.

You have to start getting out of your way or you will never get your book out to the world, you will not have the financial freedom that you so want nor will you be able to make a difference.

Here are 3 tips to start getting yourself out of your way and start making your book a bestseller…

1. Its not about what resources you have, its all about your resourcefulness. It doesn’t matter how much money, time or knowledge you have. What matters is your resourcefulness in finding ways to generate the things that you need to move forward.

Don’t know how to market your book? Then do a research, get into a course or hire a coach. There are so many ways to educate yourself. You can even go to the library or just do a Google search. Don’t have time? Then hire a team to help you or get a book on time management. Don’t have money? Then raise funds, get a loan or get more clients.

Get the idea? The world is full of abundant resources that are available to you, if only you get out there and get it, instead of complaining that you don’t have it.

2. Take the No-Excuses Approach. Nobody said it would be easy. Successful authors do what ever it takes, no ifs or buts. You may be saying, “But I’m not making excuses, they’re real!” It may feel that way, however the truth is if you’re really determined, there’s nothing that can get in your way.

It takes tenacity, persistence and a burning desire to fulfill your reason for why you want to make your book a bestseller in the first place. There will be many times that you’d feel like giving up. Challenges will come your way, but if you take the no-excuses approach, no challenge will stop you from reaching your goal.

3. Don’t listen to the Gremlin. There’s a part of your subconscious mind that has a purpose of maintaining the status quo. Let’s call it, the Gremlin.

Your gremlin’s task is to keep you from moving forward with your goals and keep you stuck where you are. It gives you really good reasons so you believe it. It tells you, “don’t take risks or you’ll get hurt when you fail,” and “don’t market your book now, its not good enough yet, you’ll just look stupid.”

Any thought or voice that you hear in your head that makes you feel fear, that’s the voice of your gremlin. It’s not true. Be aware so you know not to listen to it. Just thank him for the caution and send him on a vacation.

Connect with your higher self. The truth is its okay to make mistakes and to fail. The more you get out there and take risks, the more likely you’ll succeed.

Having a strong-take-action-do-what ever-it-takes mindset is crucial to becoming a successful bestselling author.  If you don’t then I suggest don’t even start writing or be at peace that your book will never be the success that you want it to be.  I know that’s not what you want. So make sure you start implementing the tips above!

What excuses are you telling yourself on why your book is not yet out there, a bestseller and changing lives?

    Great article!

“The biggest difference between successful authors and unsuccessful authors is mindset.”

It is so true that our mindset makes all the difference. We are ruled by what we think we are, what we think we can do, what we think circumstances are. And, for many people, what they think is negative. People have told them all their lives that they can’t do it, so they believe it and live it out. But we do not have to be controlled by what others say about us. If we would only realize that what they say is only their opinion, not the truth of the matter, we could move on to success in life and in what we do throughout our lives. It’s time to declare positive truths about ourselves and about what we do and where we are going. Prove to the world that “You CAN do it!”

Well said, Diane! Love your input on the conversation. Very uplifting!

So true. The challenge for us all is facing the inner demons. This is a story about redemption and resilience. Authors are plagued by anxiety and loneliness. Pulling your self up by your boot straps is about putting your head down, doing something positive every day, not being perfect.

I’m getting out of my comfort zone. It’s not
easy but I’m doing it because I know I have to change me to change my life.
Don’t give up on me yet I’m still in the race. I’m just a little behind. In a
short time, I’ll be running next to you, though. So, Here I come!

Mindset it important. Motivation is important, but the right knowledge is important too.
When someone can show you an easy way to do it that short circuits all the insanity,
    it’s a lot easier!

I absolutely agree, Ellen! Thing is when people don’t have the right mindset, they either don’t get help or they never implement the expert knowledge they learned!

Just take it one day at a time, Orlando. Getting out of your comfort zone is good. Keep on stretching!

I’m having to step outside my introverted self and think like a bestseller. I’ve even told my children if I want my work to be the best then I have to start believing it myself.

  • http://www.AuthorBestseller.com Trissa Tismal

That’s absolutely true, Vanessa. Starting this moment, think, talk, walk, stand like a bestselling author! You have to believe it in your bones. Go girl! :)

  • Patricia Carrigan

I agree completely.  I just jumped in with my whole heart and both feet and keep moving forward. I don’t have time to doubt myself…it’s counter productive.  I learn as I go, I ask lots of questions and I think outside the box.  I do things that other people wouldn’t think of doing.  Another thing I’ve found, people want to get to know you.  They were very surprised to find out the author of Antiserum, a vampire story, is a bubbly, silly, kind-of corny, teenage girl.  It worked in my favor to let them know who I am. Now Antiserum is more popular because Patricia Carrigan is more popular. Get it?

That totally makes sense, Patricia! People appreciate and support your work more when they know, like and trust you :)
