Growing your tribe to make your book a bestseller is NOT just a numbers game. It’s not simply about having more twitter followers, facebook friends, page likes and people on your list. (In case you didn’t catch it, here’s the link to a related post on growing your tribe as a vital ingredient in making your book a bestseller.)
Even if you have a 10,000 friends/followers/likes, if you haven’t built a relationship with those 10,000 people, having that many is useless.
Building relationships is critical in growing your tribe and making your book a bestseller. Without relationships, people won’t respond to you, more so they won’t buy your books, products and services. Either they may see you as a spammer and report you; they can unsubscribe, delete you or simply ignore you. Let’s say you only have 800 people so far, still it can feel so frustrating if all your hard work is not reaping rewards.

When you focus on relationship, you build a tribe that opens your emails, reads your articles, attends your events, buys your books, hire you for your services and raves about you to their friends. Not only do you generate more income, you also feel more fulfillment in truly making a difference in people’s lives.
Here are 3 tips to help you create strong relationships that turn into raving fans:
1. Engage by leaving comments on people’s blog or facebook posts. In twitter you do this by responding to people’s tweets. Clicking the Like button is good too and it makes it better when you answer questions, ask questions, share your thoughts and opinions.
When you comment and interact on other people’s material, not only do you develop a stronger connection with the author of the original post. You also gain exposure to other people who are reading their posts and you attract more people to you.
2. Be a giver. To strengthen the connections that you make, generously give value. There are different ways to do this.
One way is sharing your knowledge. You can share information on your subject matter or you can help a connection find the information they are looking for.
Next way to give value is by connecting your network and introducing them to each other. Who among your network will benefit from knowing each other? Bring them together. They will appreciate you taking the time to do it and will put a deposit in your relationship bank account.
Last but not the least, you give value when you share your compassion with people. Celebrate with them, cheer them on or sympathize with them. Shared emotions often create the strongest connections.
3. Follow the 90-10 rule. When you are connecting with people both online or offline. Remember to give value 90% of the time and only promote your book and services 10% of the time. People like to buy, but they don’t like to be sold. They like to buy from people they trust and they trust people who always give value.
